Gondola Connects Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows

Cable car surrounded by mountains

The base to base gondola connecting Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows is moving closer to becoming reality. This new "California Express" will allow skiers to ride between Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley.

Decreasing Traffic

Like the gondolas seen at many European ski resorts, skiers will no longer need a car or shuttle bus to visit different resorts. More than the ease of skiing between the two mountains, the environmental impact and traffic will also decrease. This is a huge project, and if done correctly, will improve the area and the local ski industry.

Environmental Impact Study

There may still be negative impacts that will effect some of the most beautiful countryside on the planet. Any planned  development that involves Placer County and the US Forest Service is always a “one step at a time” process. However, this is a huge step! This massive project will require two base terminals, two mid stations, and anywhere between 33 and 35 towers. The gondola will be approximately 13,000 feet in length and will offer an amazing ride!

This project originally included more avalanche control. Squaw and Alpine Meadows use the Gazex system, but this was removed from the current Environmental Impact Study. Avalanche control will be addressed in a later project.  These environmental issues have been debated between the US Forest Service, Placer County, the public and conservation groups for years.

One Step Closer

A significant step towards a final resolution has occurred because the draft of the environmental study will be presented at the  municipal advisory meeting in North Lake Tahoe. It will then go to the Placer County Planning Commission.  The agencies have also identified 4 alternative strategies that may help alleviate strains and issues brought about by the public, USFS, and Placer County.

Stay tuned! This base to base gondola will change Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows forever!
