The countdown to ski season is on! The recent snowstorms in the Sierra Nevada have Lake Tahoe's ski resorts ready to welcome skiers and snowboarders back to the mountains. From early-season turns on Donner Summit to breathtaking views above the lake, the 2026–27 winter season is just around the corner.

Several Tahoe-area resorts are targeting November openings, while others are planning to kick off the season in early December. Although opening dates depend on snowfall, temperatures, and snowmaking conditions, there's plenty to look forward to as the region gets ready for another winter.

Here is a look at the projected opening dates for six popular Lake Tahoe ski resorts, along with a little of what makes each mountain special.

2026–27 Projected Opening Dates

Ski Resort Projected Opening
Mt. Rose November 6
Northstar November 20
Boreal November 20
Palisades Tahoe November 25
Diamond Peak December 3
Homewood December 11 (unconfirmed)

Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe | November 6

Mt. Rose is hoping to get the season started early, with a targeted November 6 opening. Sitting just outside Reno, the resort has one of the highest base elevations in the Tahoe region at 8,260 feet, giving it an advantage when temperatures drop and snowmaking can begin.

Known for its excellent snow conditions, impressive views, and challenging terrain, Mt. Rose is a favorite among local skiers who appreciate a mountain with a little less of the big-resort atmosphere.

Northstar California | November 20

Northstar is targeting November 20 for its opening, bringing another winter of skiing, snowboarding, and village-side festivities to the North Shore. Known for its beautifully groomed runs, tree-lined trails, and welcoming mountain village, Northstar offers an appealing combination of outdoor adventure and upscale resort amenities.

It's particularly popular with families and intermediate skiers, although its varied terrain offers plenty to explore for more experienced riders. After a day on the slopes, visitors can enjoy ice skating, shopping, dining, and gathering around the village fire pits.

Boreal Mountain Resort | November 20

Boreal is also targeting a November 20 opening, making it one of the earliest opportunities for skiing and snowboarding in the Truckee-Tahoe region. Located on Donner Summit, Boreal is especially convenient for visitors coming from Sacramento and the Bay Area.

The resort is known for its terrain parks, approachable learning environment, and popular night skiing, making it possible to enjoy a few runs even after the sun goes down. Its focus on freestyle skiing and snowboarding makes it a popular destination for younger riders and those looking to develop their skills.

Palisades Tahoe | November 25

Palisades Tahoe is targeting November 25 for the start of its 2026–27 season. One of the most recognizable ski destinations in the Sierra Nevada, Palisades is famous for its dramatic alpine scenery, expansive terrain, and legendary steep runs. Its connection to Alpine Meadows also provides visitors with an enormous variety of skiing and riding experiences.

From wide-open groomers to challenging bowls, steep chutes, and extensive advanced terrain, Palisades attracts skiers of all abilities. Its history, mountain culture, and impressive scale make it one of Tahoe's signature winter destinations.

Diamond Peak | December 3

Diamond Peak in Incline Village is targeting December 3 for opening day. One of Lake Tahoe's smaller community-oriented ski resorts, Diamond Peak is particularly loved for its spectacular lake views. Several runs offer beautiful panoramas of Lake Tahoe, making it one of the more scenic places to ski in the region.

The mountain offers a relaxed atmosphere, excellent family programs, and terrain for beginners through advanced skiers. Its convenient location in Incline Village also makes it a favorite for residents and visitors staying along Tahoe's North and East Shores.

Homewood Mountain Resort | December 11 (Projected)

Homewood holds a special place along Lake Tahoe's West Shore, where skiers can enjoy beautiful views of the lake from the mountain. Its location, relaxed atmosphere, and distinctive terrain have made it a longtime favorite for those who appreciate a more intimate ski experience.

Homewood is also undergoing a major transformation, with plans for a new eight-passenger gondola, improved snowmaking, and an expanded beginner learning area. While December 11 appears on third-party projected opening calendars, the resort's opening date has not been confirmed.

Getting Ready for Another Tahoe Winter

Whether you're looking forward to the first powder day, introducing the family to skiing, or simply enjoying a few hours on the mountain followed by après-ski, the 2026–27 season offers plenty of reasons to get excited.

With Mt. Rose targeting an early November opening and several other resorts aiming for Thanksgiving week, the winter season is shaping up to get underway across the region in just a few weeks.

Remember that projected opening dates can change with weather and snow conditions. Some mountains may initially operate with limited terrain and lifts, so check individual resort websites for the latest snow reports and operating schedules before heading out.

Here's to fresh snow, bluebird days, and another unforgettable winter in Lake Tahoe!
