Strengthening Workforce Housing in Lake Tahoe
The Tahoe Housing Hub has recently announced the launch of the Accessory Dwelling Unit Accelerator Program. It is, inspired by one of the Bay Area’s successful Hello Housing programs called “Hello ADU."
They are now accepting applications with a focus on empowering empower Tahoe-Truckee homeowners to create much-needed housing for local workers. Building an ADU can be a great way of offsetting 2nd home costs. One can enjoy their home whenever they need it, while still covering some of the costs.
Benefits of Accesory Dwelling Units
The lack of privacy in renting out a portion of one’s property may keep some area homeowners from participating. However, many see the financial benefit and improvement to the value of their property. With so few available entry-level homes and affordable rentals, the program is a great solution.
ADUs are typically guest homes, in-law units, or secondary units, and are independent living spaces built on the same property. California has enacted legislation and financial assistance to promote more ADU units to meet housing needs. The Tahoe Housing Hub aims to support this strategy. They are working locally to meet the area’s demand for entry-level housing.
The program seeks to build ADUs for local workers, including first responders, teachers, nurses, small business owners, and many others who can afford to live where they work. It includes many helpful initiatives to help homeowners get started:
Comprehensive Planning
- Personalized consultations to discuss your needs and goals
- Site assessments and feasibility studies
- Design team selection and support
- Guidance through regulatory compliance and the permitting process
Construction Management

Erin Casey, the president and CEO of the Tahoe Housing Hub describes the program as “building opportunities for families and workers so they can thrive in the community they love.” The program eliminates barriers homeowners used to face in constructing ADUs in the past. This program offers hand-on guidance from start to finish.
