Lake Tahoe Ski and Snow Report

snowboarder

If you’re headed up to the Lake Tahoe this week, the sun really is out – and it’s shaping up to be a classic bluebird weekend. Weather in the Tahoe basin has been sunny and around 40°F, with temps in the mid-30s to low-40s through the afternoon before sliding into the 20s at night. Conditions will stay dry and stable, with great visibility and firm bases, especially in the mornings.

Resort Rundown: Current Conditions

Palisades Tahoe

  • Base: 29–58"
  • Snow: Machine-groomed trails providing consistent coverage.
  • Vibe: Warm sun and cool air - perfect for seeing every bump and carve line. Great visibility and snappy corduroy in the early laps.

Palisades is reporting solid open terrain with plenty of grooming underfoot – ideal for intermediate cruisers or anyone who likes that rolled-out feel.

Northstar

  • Base: 30"
  • Conditions: Packed powder and groomed runs.
  • Forecasts: Sunny skies and highs near 41°F, so the snow will soften up beautifully through midday.

Northstar’s layout and grooming make it a favorite for consistent corduroy and spring-like skiing during the warmest part of the day.

Sierra-at-Tahoe

  • Base: 40–60"
  • Conditions: Packed powder with solid coverage, and excellent terrain for tubing and groomed cruising.

This is one of those underrated gems right now – deep enough base and soft but supportive snow make for a fun mix of tubing on the flats and carving on groomers.

Mt. Rose

  • Base: 40–60"
  • Snow: Machine-groomed runs with plenty of base depth.

Because of its high base elevation, Mt. Rose often holds firm snowpack longer into warm spells. You’ll find great all-around conditions with plenty of consistent corduroy underfoot.

Sugar Bowl

  • Status: 98% open!
  • Conditions: Soft snow, groomed runs, and good bump lines.

Sugar Bowl is just about fully open across its terrain, offering a nice mix of cruisers and bumps for those who love a bit more texture underfoot. Plus, the sunshine this week will make lunchtime breaks on the deck extra pleasant.

What to Expect on the Mountain

Morning Laps

  • Cooler temps make for firm, fast snow early. If you like crisp corduroy, aim to hit the lifts right when they open.

Midday Softening

  • With highs reaching into the low-40s at lower elevations (and plenty of sun), pack a lightweight layer you can shed after first chair. Snow will mellow into comfortable, turnable conditions by noon.

Apres & Late On-Slope

  • Clear skies and dropping temps later in the afternoon mean you’ll want a mid-layer for late laps and après — temps dip into the 20s once the sun sets.

Quick Tips Before You Go

  • Sun Protection: With clear skies and mountain sun, sunscreen and goggles with good UV protection are must-haves.
  • Traffic & Travel: Winter mountain travel can still be variable — check Caltrans and chain control info before heading up, just in case.
  • Parking & Reservations: Some resorts (like Palisades and Northstar) have required parking passes on busy days.

Weather Forecast

This stretch of weather is shaping up to be a blast – crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, and solid base depths across Tahoe’s top resorts. The forecast shows a ridge that is keeping the area dry, but it may begin to move away the last week of January. Some models are showing the potential for more snow to close out the month. Longer range forecasts see additional snow in February.

Whether you’re chasing soft groomers, packed powder, or tubing fun, there’s something for everyone right now.
